Advisory Council made up of 21 UNPAID scientists, all experts in their fields report and give advice to the Government.

On the reclassification of Cannabis and Ecstasy, they advised that they should be reclassified, based on research and publication in two scientific journals.

This research was presented to the Government with the advice of the Committee and Prof. David Nutt was sacked.

It is up to the Government to decide if the advice should be taken, but it is totally abhorrent that the expert should have been sacked just because the Government didn’t agree with the advice.

I often give advice medical matters in Health and Fitness and people often disagree with my opinions, but should it come to banning me from AB for my opinions, would surely be unacceptable.

In other words, if we like what you say, then all is well, if not, then you are sacked…….that is a road that would lead to a Dictatorship.

couldn't agree with you more.
If anything sqad, Its this incompetent government that should be sacked, not the Prof.
It's a scandalous.

I was watching an interview with the lovely Dr Winston who was agreeing with me as well..
Professor Nutt was spot on when he said that alcohol and tobacco do more harm than many illegal drugs, the cost to the NHS for alcohol and smoking related illnesses is very high.
Try comparing the rate of deaths per year from lung cancer,COPD and cirrhosis of the liver (due to alcohol abuse) to those from drug overdoses and the figures speak for themselves.

What is even worse, in my opinion, is that the Conservatives have supported Allan Johnson.

Only the Lib Dems have have come out and sad that the sacking of Prof Nutt is "alarming and madness"
It is disgraceful that the can sack them, and also what has he actually been sacked for?

Can i ask your opinion on the subject as well Sqad? where do you draw the line?

Have you seen amny patients due to cannabis or ecstacy problems?

sherminator.....not my speciality as I was a surgeon, but that really is not my point.

What has he been sacked for?..........he produced an article in a Journal of Pharmaco-Psychiatry which I have never heard of and giving a lecture to a Society, giving his views on the relative danger of these particular drugs.
Alan Johnson has deemed this "going public" on personal views before discussing this with the Government. I find this amazing, as I would have thought that "going public" would mean writing your controversial views in the Daily Mail or equivalent.

I have no objection to Alan Johnson not accepting his advice......none at all..........but I do object to him being sacked because of his views and as for being sacked for "going public" this in my opinion is nonsense.

In the early 19th century, Charles Darwin produced his treatise on "the Evolution of Species" and the Church told him to "shut up".................................any resemblance?
No Tax income on Es & Cannabis!

It's all about £££s.
According to Alan Johnson,he sacked the professor for effectively campaigning against government policy.

An EXPERT told us that the Hitler Diaries were authentic. Another told us,with a Smirk, that Pandas are not Bears but Weasels, Years later with a Superior Smirk that Pandas are,of course---Bears. Experts will tell you anything. However much you hate Politicians don't forget They have to decide between expert opinions. And there are Experts who say the Cannabis causes Mental Illness.
All we need to remember, is that there is a general election in six months time. A feeble and discredited administration , rather like a condemned man, will clutch at anything. This is just a cheap political shot to garner support from middle Englands "Daily Mail" tendency.
Nobody ever lost votes by wagging the metaphorical moral finger.

brionin...that isn't the point. Certainly Alan Johnson could say thanks but no thanks and not take the advice of his advisor....no problem with that, but too sack his adviser because he doesn't agree with his research and conclusions is indefensible.....in my opinion.

daffy I suppose campaigning means publishing his work in a journal that only the experts read.

This guy is unpaid (doubt whether or not he gets "expenses") works his balls off and this is the result.

If I was Prof Nott I would go straight to the USA to work.

It is a scandal.
Oh dear Sqad. I fear I have agreed with your last statement on my posting in the News section on this subject. Whatever next ;o)

lofty....I have said this many times......you can't resist me ;-)
I can when you are misbehaving Sqad - very easily!!

I couldn't care less whether cannabis causes mental illness. The point professor Nutt keeps making is that alcohol and tobacco cause death in many cases, cannabis does not!
Drugs are classified by how much they risk killing you.How can cannabis be in the same category as amphetamine sulphate (powder form) when there is obviously more risk to life from amphetamine?
Speaking truth to power has never been an easy option.
Professor Nutt has stated that falls while horse riding result in more fatalities than taking ecstasy. For all I know, changing light bulbs may be statistically more dangerous than taking E's.
Cannabis use is said to be innocuous. I wouldn't like to have to tell the parents of a youngster, who developed schizophrenia as a result of smoking dope, that their child's ruined life was a small price to pay for the freedom of others to have a toke.
Governments, of any hue, need to deal with more than the bald facts. That this government and Prof. Nutt have come to a parting of the ways doesn't mean we're on the slippery slope to a dictatorship.

David Nott isn't saying that........he is sating that Cannabis is less dangerous to mental and physical health than is alcohol.

"That this government and Prof. Nutt have come to a parting of the ways doesn't mean we're on the slippery slope to a dictatorship."

Really?....I hope that you are correct.
