There are tests for Alzheimers to prove is Alzheimers. Dementia, as you say, can be caused by many things. One common form is vascular dementia which does have many similar symptoms to Alzheimers (and is also quite common in elderly patients)

I would think that life expectancy depends on individual circumstances and the general health of the person.

It was once thought that 'Senile Dementia' was due to old age, and that 'Alzheimer's Disease and 'Pick's Disease'
were forms of pre-senile dementia.
Nowadays, Alzheimers is regarded as being the same as
the old Senlle Dementia.
Pick's Disease is clinically the same but post-mortem
findings show argentophile plaques in the brain tissue.
Life expectancy appears to be the same whatever the
cause.
Dementia is a symptom of Alzheimers.

Sorry couldnt resist
i work in a residential home where the majority of our residents are dementia/alzheimers and really the life expectancy isnt an issue. demetia can bring more challenging behaviour shall we say which can be very upsetting for all involved. re life expectancy i have seen residents pass away at the age of 70-90 and one more recently passed away 2 weeks before her 104th birthday.
