This may seem a strange question but have you noticed that men over a certain age have an annoying habit of humming?
It may seem faintly amusing, but I tell you what I am slowly but surely going round the bend cos I have one sitting next to me at work and he does,nt stop humming or talking to himself ALL day.
My nerves are getting pretty shattered and I almost dread coming into work now and I used to love my job. I wear earphones all day and this is doing my head in too.

Please HELP what can I do?!!!!

It could be worse, he could be eating CRISPS, APPLES, and CARROTS all day.

I find that old men and women BOTH hum. I think they just don't take personal hygiene as seriously as younger people.
I thought you meant why do old men smell bad from the title of your question.lol
If it bothers you try asking him nicely if he'll stop,he may not even notice he is doing it.
SMSL @ GetOverit !!!

Coz they're human dynamos: resonating with power and energy................also full of peas and vinegar.

No, promise you I'd rather he was munching his way through Crisps, apples, carrots!
He does hum too, of fags..............
PS Wish I could "get over it" I'm not proud of feeling like I could happily thump someone!
spazvas, I know exactly what you mean!
My father in law has several annoying habits, but his humming is the worst.

If he's feeling happy he tends to hum a medley of Noel Coward songs and if he's unhappy, it's a tuneless hum.

It drives me insane!

You dont know how relieved I am to hear that there are more people out there who have come across this too and find it really irritating.

Whats so ironic is my husband does it too, so work was my sanctuary til this bloke came along..................now I've got no respite from the humming.

Praps its a cunning plan to drive me up the wall!!!!

PS Mrs Overall, they both seem to hum a tuneless hum, so I suppose that could mean they are unhappy.
Praps its living and working with me!!!
When my father in law is visiting and I can't escape him, my only respite is to continually ply him with toffees.

Mind you, I don't know which is worse - his continual slurping when he eats a toffee or his humming between toffees.
My line manager whistles all day long... the same flipping tune too ! He doesn't even realise he is doing it so I gently tease him by asking him to whistle something he's never heard of ..... it works for a little while hehe.... You need to accept that everyone is different and we all have our little idiosynchroncies... maybe he gets annoyed by something you do ? Now, talking to himself... that IS seriously worrying !
I got a bit hot under the collar when we were at a show earlier this year , The Rat Pack tribute , and my step-father was humming and singing along at times ....not when he was supposed to :-}
I absolutely HATE humming...and whistling. I once-very abruptly-told off a new girl where I was working because she whistled all the time. It wasn't even a tune...just random noise. As for the humming....if it was my man,I would have done him serious damage by now-lol

It is good to know there are others who feel the same. Like you say Jugglering we all have our idiosynchronsies but I would like to think I would be aware if I was irritating the hell out of other people.
Trouble is I've made this an issue for myself now and I suppose I will just have to learn to live with it or put up with it!
Still dreading tomorrow though :(
Question Author
Should have said learn to live with it or do something about it, what I don't know though.

I work with someone who whistles all the time, and to make it worse she whistles hymns.
Myabe he's hums because he's happy spavas. Surely thats better than these youths who go around shouting obcenities to everyone? I thinks its nice to hear an elderly person humming or singing.
Why do old men hum? Simple...

because they've forgotten the words!
(rimshot)

I'll get me coat...

Put a peg on his nose. Pinch your nose and see if you can hum. Not easy is it.
