It depends if you want them to look smart or not.I waggled the toes around quite hard that helped and jumped up and down on them trying to soften the spine at the back a bit. Failing that extra socks or just wearing them for a short period everyday. I found the ones with welted leather were much better but they only do them in black. I now wear a pair of Dickies which I got from a builders merchant for a bargain 39 which are excellent and the soles last longer. No VAT on safety boots.
No pain, no gain I reckon heel wise, but a potato put in the front overnight for a couple of nights will help the toe area. (big potato, jammed in that is)
If its heel blisters? An ordinary candle, rubbed really well around the heel area can help sometimes. The wax creates a barrier between your heel and the boot surface.
When I was a postman we would hammer the back of the boots until they were soft and pliable.

I have been faced with the new boot isue many times over the years. The key thing to remember is, you have to break them in gradually!, a day on day off sometimes worked for me but other times, a couple of hours at a time was enough to start with.

you can also make this easier by putting plenty of wax on over night to make them supple ie Nikwax..

Thanks for the help, I will look at the wax thing. I did read about servicemen peeing into the boots and then battering the boots (Spike Milligan), but decided against that. Vic
At work if a customer says boots are tight around the heel we suggest rubbing vaseline into the leather on the outside, but on the inside it isn't usually leather, check what the lining is before you try to put any leather softener on. There should be a materials key stuck to the boot telling u the 3 materials that make up the sole, outer and inner of the boot.
When i got a new pair of boots my mum used to wear them around the house or to't pub when i didnt need them to wear them in for me. They were purple new rock boots. Aint mums great!!
Plasters over the areas that rub! Eventually you won't need them any more as they get more flexible..
