Someone sent me some important stuff and didn't pay the correct postage. I paid by pay pal via the post office scheme and it was delivered two days later. How were the asking you to pay. I might be wrong, but aren't scams usually by phone or email. Ot through putting cards through doors.
there was no indication of what the object was from any company either

I doubt that it's a scam. £2.50 is the standard charge that's levied when the sender has paid insufficient postage.
So if, for example, someone has sent you some documents in an envelope that's more than 5mm thick and only paid the 'letter' rate (rather than that for a 'large letter'), you'll have to pay the fee before the item can be delivered to you.
Royal Mail's system needs to be able to link any payment for insufficient postage to the actual item. So, if you try to make a payment for an item that doesn't actually exist, your payment won't be accepted.

and try entering the relevant details. If the system doesn't recognise what you've entered, it's a scam. However if the information that you've provided is accepted, you'll know that there really is an item awaiting delivery to you once you've paid the fee.
