Couldn't a little respect for our opinions, as Christians, be appropriate? Why do atheists and agnostics continually knock our churches. It is to justify their opinions, that is to say that they feel in some way superior and that they can only justify themselves through attack. I wholly respect others' views about religion so please allow Christians to have theirs. It does seem that some can only maintain their views by attacking that of others.

It becomes white noise after a while and you stop reading it I'm afraid, which is sad really.

Apparently my mum's in heaven now, Rowan. According to a cousin she's sitting at the right hand of god. Well, I thought, that'll teach him.
Looks like Paigntonian has a point.
Of course he does, Douglas but he did ask why people like me knock his churches.
Would have been rude to ignore and not answer him.
Better than paying for therapy I suppose.
Dave isn't in heaven, he went to the dark like every other living thing. Why do humans think they would be different to any other animal. Born grow, breed die we will be a better species when we realise how we behave in this life matters because it is the only one we will have not out of fear of help or dreams of heaven.
i'm an atheist and I love religious buildings, I love the architecture the attention to detail etc.
so do i TTT,
I like religious buildings too. I’ve visited such places all over the world and this is one of the most magnificent I’ve ever come across. Just beautiful in its simplicity - both inside and out. For me it knocks spots off the colourful and opulent temples and mosques and the ostentatious churches, including St Peter’s in Rome.

looks beautiful
i have been in many a cathedral and marvelled at how they were built.
'that is to say that they feel in some way superior'

Nice way to start a thread about respect!

I tend to steer clear of contributing to religious discussions, for several reasons, quite often the viewpoints (Christian, agnostic, atheist) are entrenched, so the "discussion" descends into name-calling quite quickly. Yesterday there was a thread on the spread of religion. One regular contributor described Islam as "a cancer". What does that say about the level of debate?
drm that he doesn't like Islamic adherents presumably
Drm, I agree. It's not easy to get a discussion on religion here. People are entrenched and don't seem intrested in others' points of view. I call myself 'atheist' because I am on level 6 out of 7 (I think that's right) on Dawkins scale of god v no-god; 1's and 7's can't prove their position. 6's are to all intents and purposes non-believers, but accept that it is conceivable that they could change their mind if they were convincigly persuaded.

If you mean by that, your point of view, well there isn't really anything to discuss - you don't believe in religion, - period; but within wide field of theology, there is an enormous amount of things to discuss & lot's of disagreements too.

I can't understand why you bother entering threads in the Religion & Spirituality section, as they are on subjects which are meaningless to you, n'est-ce pas?
The thing that convinces me as time goes on and we get closer to the eyewitness period f o r the Christian Jesus there is nothing. In my mind a man wandering round doing miracles in front of thousands would appear in the records. A rebel leader maybe, airbrushed by victors, no there would be something. So take Jesus out of the equation and you are left with variations on the theme of God. A being t h at generally reflects the nature of society at the time of first appearance, so the biggest miracle for the earliest people was birth hence the feminine divine, later patriarchy and stories to explain nature a vengeful angry father. Now when humans are materialistic a God of reward, for a human kind a deity of the cost benefit equation.
