Cat Calling - How Do Women Feel About It?

By cat calling I mean when people (usually always men) shout sexually suggestive or aggressive comments at women in public.

Has this ever happened to you and if so how did you feel.

A couple of days ago I witnessed an incident. A young lady only in her early twenties was standing outside a pub smoking - she was wearing a uniform and was a member of bar staff in the pub I think. There was a window cleaner (late 40's)probably old enough to be her Dad up a ladder cleaning the windows of the pub next door.

The window cleaner shouted a sexual comment to the young lady. I won't repeat it because of Answerbank rules but it was along the lines of how he liked her legs and wanted to use them as a scarf.

The young lady looked very uncomfortable. I was very shocked I thought this king of sexist nonsense ended in the 90's. I asked her if she was okay - actually I was ready to give him a right mouthful. She just laughed and said ignore him he is an idiot.

It just got me thinking - do some women actual enjoy cat calling because it makes them feel desirable. Lets face it we all want to feel sexy but what about when it goes too far?

Has it ever happened to you? What did you do?

No women has ever cat called, or drooled over me even when I worked in a care home. Don't know how I would react probably just go red.
Question Author
Mallyj that sounds terrible so sorry.
Would you want them to? X
I must admit cat calling back in my youth did not include the lewd sexual comments that apparenty happen now. And women were generally quite flattered.
Question Author
Would I want to be cat called - difficult to say really, I suppose it would be a confidence boost.
Question Author
I didn't think it went on that much these days - shows how much I know.
Most women don't really need a "boost" from strange men. It makes them seem a bit desperate (very unattractive). I doubt you would find it flattering in real life xx

Suppose so Pixie
It may be different for you, of course. I can only give an opinion from a female point of view.
So you were ready to "give him a right mouthful", Tim, were you? What, like you did (didn't) to the guy emptying his colostomy bag in public, a few months back. You really should start minding your own business. You say the young lady concerned was probably a barmaid. If that's so, she will no doubt be very adept at handling such crudeness. The first thing a barmaid learns is how to pull a good pint. The second is how to handle pimmel kopfs.
We can look after ourselves, barmaid or not Ken. ;o). But Tim's intentions were good.

His intentions may be good, but they could also land him in a whole heap of trouble. I've told this story on here before but, in this context, it may be worth repeating. Back in the 70s, on leave from the army, i was looking for Lloyds bank in Blackpool when i saw a guy beating a woman. I stopped the car, got out and remonstrated with him. He approached me aggressively so i laid him out. Only to be attacked by the woman and her long finger nails. Lesson learned.
I've seen that happen, Ken.
I also learned not to intervene when two siblings are fighting. Same result - only they both turn on you:-((
Oh yes, Ken :-). My mum used to say that about my sister and me... :-)
Never get between siblings or any family members really.
No... as a child, it was fine for me to want to kill my sister lol... but nobody else was allowed to insult her :-)
Same. My kids are the same as well.
I understand Ken, but I was only talking about cat calling. However, if I was being physically assaulted would like to think a physically fit male/female would intervene. Too many people walk on by. Unfortunately, in your case the female concerned didn't deserve your action.
