I've read somewhere that you can cure this by diet alone. I read on here that someone had succeeded in doing this,( I think it was baldric).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been diagnosed with type 2?
I've reversed my Type 2 but not by diet alone. Weighing in at 18.5 stone, i was prescribed 4 Metformin per day. I changed my diet drastically and began an exercise regime; just 15 mins at first then gradually working up to an hour. The weight began to drop off and, as it did, so my intake of Metformin was decreased one by one, until it was deemed i no longer needed to take them. In total, i lost just under 6.5 stone in about 18 - 20 months and, although i have put some of that weight back on, i have maintained my diet and still have no need of the medication. I had my annual review just last month and everything is in good order.
Very impressive Ken.

(For clarity this is a non-sarky comment)
Well done, Ken!

Had s new hip in early August, which went well. Taken into hospital on bank holiday Sunday with violent shaking and high temperature (40.9). They thought it was an infection of the new hip. Turns out I had diverticulitis. Also discovered that it brought on type 2 diabetes. I'm not overweight, although after nine days in hospital I'd lost over a stone.
Sorry to hear that, Melv. You have been through the mill. I wish you well even though I can't be of any help re the diet.

Thank you for that, Tilly.
I consider myself quite lucky, melv, in that i was already a lover of fresh fruit and veg. Basically all i did was to monitor my sugar intake using the 'traffic light' markings on most products, switch from white bread to wholemeal, same with rice and replaced roughly a half portion of what meat i would normally eat and swap it for extra veg. I also walked everywhere - weather permitting - whenever possible. Obviously when going shopping, i would walk to the supermarket (nearly all downhill) and taxi back. Haven't been on a bus for just under 10 years.
You say you're not overweight so perhaps just a change of diet will suffice for you and reverse the Diabetes?
Have you been allocated a Diabetic Nurse/Adviser?

You need good nutrition that will also take into consideration your Diverticular disease as well as your Diabetes.

Exercise must be as guided by physio so soon after surgery too.
Mamy; i think most medical practices refer type 2 Diabetes patients to; a podiatrist, a nutritionist and an optician. Unless there is something wrong with the feet, the podiatrist will see you just the once (as will the nutritionist) but your feet will be checked out every 12 months as will your eyes.
I realise that Ken and very well done to you.

I was simply wondering whether the bout of Diverticulitis was indicative of a problem that may need a particular dietary approach.

I've sorted out my diet for diverticulitis, which has hardly changed, as I eat plenty of fruit and veg already. Looks like I should carry on doing the same.
Thanks for your helpful replies.

I've been to see the practice nurse this morning and she checked my feet, took some bloods, pulse etc. I found it puzzling that a blood-sugar test wasn't taken.
melv...... a blood test for diabetes was almost certainly a part of your blood test.
Yes you can reverse type 2 diabetes by diet alone, but that would involve a 800Cal diet a day plus exercise.
Who could do that ?.........not many.
Who would want to do that?.......not many.
P.S the test was HbAiC which measures you average blood sugars over a 3 month period.
Question Author
I'd waste away on 800 cals a day sqad. Lol.
LOL...so would 99% of the population.

It can be done, but it ain't easy, took me over 9 years and a lot of willpower, luckily I have a reasonably active lifestyle for a 68 year old, dog walking etc.
There are plenty of obese people for whom 800 Cals wouldn't be a bad thing, sqad:-) I did what i did because i needed to lose weight and because of the damage Type 2 can do to various organs. (As a result of the Diabetes, i do have CKD.) There was also the small matter of my biological father (never met him - never wanted to)being diagnosed with Type 2 one year, and dying the next due to complications caused by the Diabetes.
