As you know I found a nice dog sitter that appeals to me via a site when I go holiday for a few days. I asked how much going through the site cost. I got a reply via email - they said I would know the amount when I book him but it is 19%+1 - anybody know how much this is. Thanks

no
ask for the cost in advance or go elsewhere
Did you mean to type "19% +1", JJ?
Is this about the amount the sitter charges or the commission the site takes?
If you stayed near me jennyjoan I would watch your dog no charge I am still missing my Jordy.
Awww, Jordy xx
Simple really, don't book or buy anything until you know the price.

well they did say once I book they will tell me the price like I'm not obliged to pay this commission but surely that's putting me in a position because I will have booked the guy and if that commission is too high and I don't want to pay that - that means I would have to unbook the guy.

////this is the email Our commission is 19% + £1 and includes a number of advantages such as veterinary cover in case of an accident and management of your booking.

When you make a booking you will see all these details before payment.

If you have any questions we will be happy to help you.

Regards.////

I do have my own insurance myself.

19% of the booking price plus £1 so for example
the booking price is £200 the commision will be £38 plus £1 so £39 in total
19% of what? it all sounds unnecessarily complicated to me

that's what I think too AEL - 19% of what. I am going to reply -
Well at least that looks like you will see the price before you pay and can delete it - but why use what looks like an agency so you have to pay them commission? Can you not find an individual to contact? for example my local free through the door newsletter always has people offering this kind of service and as they are local you can get better reviews. Have you dismissed actually putting him in boarding kennels for a few days (I think much safer than a stranger coming into the house).
I would suggest that the 19% +£1 is referring to the cost of the dog sitter. e.g dog sitter charges £10 per hour for 10hrs=£100 so the charge to the agency site would be £20.
Do you get to speak with the sitter before you book. I would like to
A percentage just doesn't make sense. It penalises people going on luxury holidays when the cost of looking after the dog is just the same.
Maybe you're teh only one that's interpreted as being based on 19% of the holiday price. Surely it's 19% of the dog carer's fee. Or am I missing a joke
Question Author
yes I have dismissed the kennels - really do like the profile this guy and also he lives about one and half miles away.

The guy charges £20 a day for boarding so Danny I like your suggestion. I certainly would be happy to pay up to £20 but you have worked out that on the basis of the guy charging £10 that the commission could be £20 but it could be £40 at £20 a day.

Prudie the guy takes the dog into his home and he has loads of land and 3 dogs of his own.

fiction - I have posted the actual email.
Question Author
I have replied to the email - asking like 19% of what - so will wait and see what they say. Thanks all for trying to help.

That would not be 19%
