Interesting to know why they cause adverse reactions in so many people yet not in others. Might it be the different types of medication they are on?
Was prescribed 80mg Atorvastatin back in '09 after my heart attack. I began to suffer from joint pain and localised swelling; knuckles, toes, base of thumb, heel/sole of foot. Complained to my doc about it and i asked if it could be the statins. He replied in the negative and asked me to keep a diary for 3 months of all these unexplained symptoms. I lasted 36 days. On many of those days i couldn't walk because the heel of one foot and the sole of the other were affected and on other days i couldn't even peel and cut vegetables. When i went to see him again with the 36 day diary, he agreed to halve the dosage to 40mg. I now rarely suffer from the symptoms and when they are present, they are nowhere near as debilitating as they once were. Conclusion; must've been the statins, then?
Jack. It would be interesting to know what time of day the statin is taken ( with those who have side effects ) .

Thanks for all replies.
Just as an aside, can Sqad, (or anyone else) tell me, Are GP's ever bribed (convinced etc) by phamacetical companies to prescribe their drugs?
Nailit, in our house we consume butter and cheese by the bucket load and I always cook my roasties in dripping or lard. I have my fair share of wine, and then some! I'm not overweight and my cholesterol has never been elevated. I've never had a high BP reading in my life.

I simply never eat processed or refined foods and and sugars and carbs are kept as rare treats. I don't do fruit but I eat a tonne of veg weekly.
LOL...box of golf balls. Lunch.
Back in the 70-80 it was rife....probably, less so now.
Nomercy...that is not an uncommon situation which is one reason why the medical profession and biochemists are at odds to explain the relationship between dietary fats in all forms and blood lipid profiles.
Sqad, extensive studies have actually now concluded that dietary cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol.
NoM.......that does not surprise me.

Sqad's theory....it's not the fats that kill you but the carbohydrates.

P.S Don't quote me...;-)
@ anne @ 24:48.

I was advised to take my statin at night.
The fact that dietary cholesterol doesn't affect blood cholesterol has been common knowledge for years.
Can anyone explain the difference between dietary and blood cholesterol?
Jack....do you men biochemically?...if so I can't.
Dietary cholesterol is what you eat (fats etc) and blood cholesterol is dietary cholesterol after it has been digested and has entered the blood.
I am on simvastatin 40mg I have had no problem with mine, I've been on them 7 years. My last cholesterol test was 5.6 so I am not sure if they are making much difference, but I dread to think what it would be like without them
Well in that case there must be a connection, or am I thick?
Jack...one thing you are not.......and that is thick.

I love you sqad...it's refreshing to read a statement by someone in the medical profession that goes against what has been considered "right" or "healthy" for several generations.
I've also read that the connection between dietary fat and heart disease has never been proven. There seems to be a new generation of doctors/scientists doing research that disproves the old thinking.
I also agree with Nom...eat real food...including fat.
Jack, I also take mine at night,
I had painful muscles when I was prescribed Atorvistatin. I moved to Simvastatin and have been fine.

However I’ve heard that statins can cause absent mindfulness and I’ve experienced this.

Any ideas anyone?
