Turmeric For The Joints

I've just seen an add extolling the virtues of turmeric (in tablet form) for treating painful joints. Has anyone heard if this is efficacious or is it another "snake oil" product?
The tablets are about £20. for a month's supply.

I've been using it for years and found it beneficial. Don't use the tablets though, I add a teaspoonful or two to many dishes, soups, stews, pasta dishes etc.
Very few scientific studies Khandro but what seems to be the opinion is that turmeric has a preventative role to play, rather than an active role i.e when one is suffering from arthritis then turmeric has little or no part to play in easing the pain.
That is it in a nutshell in my opinion.
Not sure about joints but many in my fitness classses take them for the health, and antioxidant value based on the many scientific studies done on the extract of turmeric called “Curcumin”
Which is what you want. I’ll try and dig up some studies, research papers or just some layman’s facts later and more better compounds for joints if you require them.
I've used fresh turmeric to make turmeric tea. I found it to be somewhat effective...more so than the powder. But grating fresh turmeric is a faff...and messy.
there was an episode of superfoods where they looked at this and i'm sure you had to have it in a particular form and strength for it to have an effect (i can't remember what it was though). The episode is here if you want to watch

There was one of those 'Trust me I'm a doctor" or "The truth about .." programmes recently that confirmed that turmeric does have some health giving properties.
Whether a tablet can provide the same is anyone's guess.
I like turmeric tea - Twining's do one with orange and star anise which is lovely

Looks like the supplements are useless, you need the real thing.
Turmeric latte is lovely...fresh turmeric, ginger, a bit of black pepper, cinnamon or cardamom, and coconut milk.
Think I'll buy some root this weekend, grate and freeze it.
...or, just have it in curries.
Oh Ric, prunes are lovely.

They also keep you exercised running to the loo.
Turmeric=crap for health but great for cooking.

Curcumin=god send for health
It would seem that *gentle* heat applied to fresh turmeric makes the compounds in it more bioavailable than they are in powder.

I understand that taking Turmeric is not advised if you are taking any form of blood thinners - best to take some advice about this.

That study seeks to bring together the evidence of a number of different randomised clinical trials( RCTs). The key part of the conclusion is as follows:
"In conclusion, these RCTs provide scientific evidence that supports the efficacy of turmeric extract (about 1000 mg/day of curcumin) in the treatment of arthritis. However, the total number of RCTs included in the analysis, the total sample size, and the methodological quality of the primary studies were not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions. Thus, more rigorous and larger studies are needed to confirm the therapeutic efficacy of turmeric for arthritis".

Mrs B. swears by it, been taking it for about 18-20 years.
Was recommended it by an Indian Doctor colleague in the NHS.
She is now retired and does not suffer joint problems.
