Bear with me on this......
Firstly, I live and work nowhere near where I was brought up and went to school.
We've just taken on a Uni leaver at work who lived in Newcastle (approx 90 miles N of us). Until she finds somewhere to stay, she's living with her mum's best friend. Now i knew this was roughly where I used to live but it wasn't till she asked me if I knew a particular town well that it turned out her mum was from there. Not only that, but I went to school with her and her mums best friend was married to a chap who was one of my best friends at school (known him for 48 years) and is her Godfather!

Statisticians would have us believe these "coincidences" are in fact to be expected. But to be a participant in one is still an uplifiting experience IMO.
A couple of years ago, I was sitting in "my" bar in the Ontario town in which I live, and this guy walks in and orders a beer. Hearing the English accent, I asked what part he was from, he replied "Newcastle". Most people who mention that town are geordies so I replied that he didn't sound like one. He then said "No, Newcastle-under-Lyme." What a coincidence! That's where I was born. Now how many people from a small place like that are going to meet in the small place I live in now. I thought of the line from Casablanca: "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world (he) walks into mine"!
When we moved into our last house, my neighbours were people I had worked with 30 years ago.
Did you say 'Here's looking at you, kid', stuey?
In the 1970's my OH was a buyer for Vauxhall, a rep for Wales came to see him and asked if he had been watching Fallen Hero a series about a rugby star who had fallen on hard times . OH said that he was 'forced' to watch it because his mother-in-law came from Pontycymmer where it was film. The rep asked her name but OH only knew her married name so he rang her. It turned out that their families knew each other very well and that my Mum used to baby sit him when he was little! The rep went to see her that afternoon and they had a wonderful catch up and remained in contact. How strange was that!
Good one, Svejk; however, no I didn't: he looked nothing like Ingrid:)
I was in a pub in Ireland and got chatting to some people. Conversation comes to where we are from etc. She tells me and I say 'my daughters family are from there...cut a long story short turns out she's my daughters cousin. Not only that but my current partners uncle is also her uncle. That's a small world.
When my sister lived in Hong Kong, my parents went out to visit her. They were having a meal in a restaurant and asked this youngish guy on the next table to take their photograph. This was before selfies were around.

My Father asked him where he came from and he said, Northumberland. My Father told him that we had a caravan on a site, overlooking Holy Island and he said, his folks did too and he had grown up there.

There are only 40 caravans on the site and so my folks knew the family. This young man was the little boy that used to play on the site and on the beach, every weekend, back then.

What are the odds on them meeting?
Went to a very very good friends wedding a number of years ago, so good a friend my missus thought we were having an affair.........

At the reception, I sat at our allotted table with my wife, and another couple sat down beside us, she reached across, gave me a kiss and said "hi Donald... long time no see"...... Wifes eyes were on stalks I went bright red it was a girl I'd grown up a couple of doors from who'd gone to Uni with my friend in Edinburgh.... then the next guests sat down I just said What The Funicular is going on here.... a girl who'd been in my class at secondary school did exactly the same thing.... When the bride, my now "ex-friend" sat down, her dad stood up and said "Ali had a message, I don't know what it means but I do know the joker in question ........ just said "revenge for all those wind ups is very very sweet Young and I baggsy a dance later""..... rat
