I don't actually recall seeing a sign specifying a maximum number of items (other than at the Customer Service desk or tobacco kiosk by the doors) in any supermarket for a long time now. I only seem to see 'Baskets only', rather than a specified number of items.

Anyway, I'd always rather queue for the self-checkouts rather than use any staffed one!

Bednobs - that's just ignorant. Anyone with half a brain should be able to figure out why someone might have a basket in a trolley.

Every time I try to use the DIY ones,something goes wrong and I have to wait for someone to come and help,and they always make me feel like a naughty schoolgirl.(must admit I did used to be a naughty schoolgirl)

Well today (quiet time) the only till open was for baskets so dealt with trolleys.

when my stuff is on the conveyor belt at check out I like to see what the person behind me is buying and try to figure out their lifestyle. I have been known to ask about one of their items if I have never tried it myself.

My local supermarket changed the signage from '10 items or less' to 'Baskets only' - a lady behind me one day commented that I had 24 items in my basket...."wow" I replied "I have beaten my previous best of 21".

I don't think that was the response she expected.

Can't say it bothers me much. Life has many more challenges than counting how many items folk have in their baskets.
