When there is a possible infection in an extraction cavity, is it necessary to see a Dentist to receive a prescription for AntiBs, or could a doctor prescribe them?

my dentist has prescribed me antibiotics prior to dental work in the past. I have never had to see the quack thankfully ;)

Unfortunately, trying to get to see the Dentist is the problem.......:o(

It would be much more convenient if we could pop to GPs.
normally they don't do dental stuff, at least mine haven't, though I don't see why not. Could you give him/her a ring and ask? Nothing in the Hippocratic Oath says "... except teeth".
ahh, well I suppose you could give it a try, however they may not want to interfere with your dentists treatment..
as an emerency any medic at Walkin, GP or hospital can prescribe ABiotics
What's the problem, the distance or them saying they can't see you? When I had a problem after extraction I just went into the dental surgery unannounced. They asked if I could come back in the afternoon and I said no so they let me go in after a short wait.
I had this once, Jack. I just rang the dentist and they left a prescription for me at the desk.

The (emergency) Dentist's 'treatment' simply involved an extraction last Saturday.......
Since that time things have got worse. The earliest appointment to be had, seems to be Saturday (emergency Dentist!!!) or Monday for the usual Dentist. Patient is in great deal of pain and looking like a one-sided Hamster. :o(
Previous history of abcesses in jaw and recent serious infection (not teeth, though) left patient with very low immune system.
Our chemist subscribes ABs as he sees fit

That could be quite a distance for me to travel, Tambo........
That sounds nasty...if it was me I'd ring the gp straight away to see what they can do but I wouldn't be put off until Saturday and certainly not Monday.
Phone the dentist again and scream with pain. They will and must fit you in today. I'm in a similar situation but luckily into my 2nd day of antibiotics having got in on an emergency appointment the morning after I phoned.

Forgive me for sounding like Sqad, but in the meantime take 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours and don't stop until well into the 2nd day of antibiotics.

Thinking of you.
I had the same swollen hamster face problem and a terrible toothache. I went to the doctors and he had no problem dishing me out the needed anti's and painkillers.

Maybe you could call your surgery beforehand to ask?
lol jth, your chemist might do for you.
If you ring your GP and explain the situation there should be no difficulty in getting a prescription for antibiotics. It's a medical as well as a dental emergency.

Rung the surgery......nothing doing.

It has to be the Dental Walk-in-centre as any treatment needs to come out of 'NHS Budget (teeth)' instead of 'NHS Budget (medical)'.

Painkillers are already being gulped by the fistfull.

Looks like I'm going to have to get 'Medieval' on the Dental Receptionists ass.....
I am surprised by that - obviously someone at the GP surgery is just concentrating on keeping to budget. Did you manage to speak to a GP or was it someone else.

Good luck in any case.

Cost £10ish at chemist
I'd be talking to the doc, also exploring other options. Local general hospitals sometimes have dental/maxillo-facial clinics who could help.
