I have the marina coil and have not had a period in the time I've had it (3 years). Then 5 months ago I started light bleeding after sex and that has progressed to heavier bleeding after sex. I have a history of abnormal smears but have been clear for 7 years. I have been tested for infection this is also clear. I am 36 and have had 2 children. Today my doctor referred me to a gynaecologist for further investigation. Im pleased to be referred but worried what the cause could be.
Any thoughts....

Yes...I have a few thoughts, but the main one is that your GP has referred you, quite correctly, to rule out the outside chance of there being a malignant lesion.
By far the commonest cause will be a benign polyp in the cervix or less likely in the uterus.......and that is the most likely scenario.

Also bleeding with the Marina Coil is quite an accepted side effect, but your description of post coital bleeding would lead me to suspect the polyp.

Keep us informed.
Would the Mirena coil stop periods though?

I ask because I considered the coil a while back.
Hi! darling.

Well, scanty or no periods is not an uncommon feature with women who have the Marina Coil fitted, but is not guaranteed to produce this required situation.

You could try it and see.....
NoM, I've had the marina coil for a few years now. Cramps (quite usual and common) for a few weeks, intermittent bleeding and nothing at all after a few weeks when it all settled. Bliss.
(Sorry Missy to go off a bit)
