i've had a sore throat for the last two days now, its started after I had flu like symptoms.
I am finding it really hard to swallow and my tonsils are swollen, I also have swollen glands and my tonsils have white patches on them, what do I have and is there any remedies around the house apart from ibuprofen as I dont have any and paracetamol as ive exceed the reccomend dose within the last 24hrs.
Sounds like tonsilitis to me and quite a bad dose of it. Best thing is get to a doctor as soon as possible but in the meantime what ladya suggests is all you can do.
ooh JS they don't like to remove tonsils these days.
When my son (who is now 19 ish) suffered tonsillitis the doc said if he had it 6 times year they would consider it - that was about 10 years ago. They like to keep the tonsils as it's a very good first defence against germs. It doesn't take the pain away tho.
Your tonsils are there for a reason which I think is to stop some germs from going down further (not sure about this, only think) so you certainly won't be losing them unless it is absolutely necessary and if you get some antibiotics it will soon be better.
Don't know how old you are, but it certainly sounds like acute tonsillitis and you will need antibiotics and Ibuprofen 400mgms to relieve the pain.
If you less than 20 years old, then one must consider Glandular Fever as well as Acute tonsillitis.
Tonsils removed......depends......almost certainly not, but if you have had recurrent attacks in the past then one would have to consider removing them.
I had my tonsils and adenoids out way back in the 50s when I was 5. Seemed to be a fairly routine thing in those days. Never found out what an adenoid was, but I ain't got none!
mike....same thing as tonsil except it is at the back of the nose. I funded my retirement and educated 4 kids on the back of private TsAs so don't knock em :-)
I'm not knocking it. The attraction in those days when post-war rationing was just ending was that for the first 24 hours the only thing you were allowed to eat was ice cream!
