My local council said today they couldnt empty the bins because the lids were frozen shut. I went out to mine this morning to put rubbish in, and all that was need was a sharp pull to free it. They should have a gold star for this excuse. What a load of wimps.

How much later did you try to open the bin?

Can be bought for 60p a can.

Poor binmen couldnt open the lids because of a little ice around the lid. The British work force Eh. :0)

What do they do when they can't go out emptying bins?  Just take the day off on full pay - or would they be asked to go out later when it's not so cold and the ice has melted?

Question Author

Under normal circumstances when the bin is lifted up by the truck and tipped, the bin lid will automatically flip open. It must have been far to much for their brains to take in hand a flat head screwdriver and place it under the lip of the lid to break the ice seal before tipping. Maybe that involved to much effort / extra work?

They need to have a Quick Look inside to see if they can refuse to take it for what's in it .Easy eh

My council has a lorry with two men to collect in their words" large heavy items". They wouldn't allow this to be arranged by phone, we had to visit the recycling office. I asked them to collect a large old type TV and was informed this was too heavy. The person then helpfully suggested that if I put it in my boot and take it to them, they would "gladly accept it". I assumed I looked stronger than any two council workers.

They must have been over joyed when covid kicked in

I think, regarding rubbish, the bought in more rules than the government did, and still care to prolong them.Is it any wonder really, the increase in fly tipping

Not much regard for the working man and his everyday problems from the residents of Comfytown today.

Because that's what they are selling it at.

A classic case of "Ho Ho Ho, let's bash the working classes, although there's no way we would ever do their job."

A disgrace. We have been too tolerant of a disrespectful, incompetent so called service. Run by an arrogant overpriced council. We have become a milk cow to be abused.

Canary 15.28. You are at times a little to quick to jump the gun. (I am) working class and have been for 73 years, however compared to my fellow workers of those past years, todays working class are being allowed to find every excuse under the sun to avoid working, sometimes working smarter can still get the job done without having to work harder. In my area they fight to get a job emptying bins because its  well paid with very little, or even no resposibility whatsoever. Only the driver may have hassle from time to time getting those large trucks around narrow roads. Not everyone on here comes on just to score a political goal. OK.

Our binmen came all through the lockdown so it doesn't apply to all areas!

15.57 The strick rules was really to do with many other council contracts and recycling centres than general bin emptying.

I’m old enough to remember when the bin-men came into your back garden, picked up the metal dustbin and carried it over their back to the lorry in the street and emptied it manually - then returning the bin to where it was normally placed by the householder.

Now I have to place my bin at the edge of my property boundary (on collection day), from where it will be wheeled to a platform and automatically emptied – the bin will then be left at some random location on the pavement, blocking the pedestrian route.

As Hymie has mentioned and my experience of bin-persons confirms, these days everything seems to be 'shoddy' to the point that I question the claims read elsewhere on AB that it is the 'meaningful change' that allows us to enjoy the life most of us are living now.. my honest answer is it really better or worse, who is to blame? How did things end up as they are with my bin left at some random location on the pavement, then some mad escooter person (M/F old/young) whizzes down our hill on the pavement (a one way road up!) at high speed narrowly missing said bin, wearing earbuds glancing down at a smartphone on the handlebars.. I know who I'd blame, a certain Tory woman prime minister (I will not mention her name) who wrought meaningful change on this country.. and made it worse. Unless someone has a better explanation of how things got to be how they are now? What happened to the conscientious workers of the past?

Couldnt agree more with the last 2 posts. All thats wanted now is little work and easy money.

Pride in your work. Doing a proper job. Integrity, if a jobs worth doing etc. Don’t make me laugh, because I’m crying.
