Some of you know about my experiences with buying on-line....dicky duck and two birthing pools etc......
Gave it another go this morning....A £450 bookcase from John Lewis. Quite easy really....all went well and the order was confirmed until!!!!!!!!!.........
One hour later when the credit card company phoned me to say they had declined a payment to John Lewis.
Why?
Because it's so unusual for me to make an on-line purchase they wanted to check I really had!
Think I might give up. :-(
*** them, gness - why didn't they just contact you first to verify....actually, a tip for all is that if you are to make a major purchase or travel extensively, call your credit card company(ies) so they are aware of where you are and to accept transactions. Use to do this with Amex extensively.....
You're lucky gness - according to Virgin Mobile the house I have lived at for the last 24 years does not exist ... so I can't have a contract with them. Useless BeardyPillocks.
Fortunately Mr TescoMobile has now found my house and so I have taken my business to him.
Appreciate their security but it wasn't huge amount.
If I tell them I'm off to Ireland will they inform the Guinness brewery so they can increase production? x
Credit card companies use neural technologies and heuristic algorithms to "decide" if a transaction is potentially fraudulent or not. Obviously, if the merchant you're transacting with has a higher than normal history of chargebacks, then this can set the alarms off, but one of the most common causes is what is deemed to be "unusual" spending patterns. If, e.g. you use your credit card to buy two or three CDs from Amazon every month and then suddenly there are half a dozen transactions in Oxford Street, then that would be considered "unusual".
Other than to ring them up before you buy anything at all out of the ordinary, there's not a lot you can do about it...
Gness, that's not usual, and responsible of your card-holder. We made a large purchase (unusual) on our card a few weeks ago, and I rang them up to told them to expect it, to avoid any problems.
I don't know why you get these problems, we buy on-line all the time!!
There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery."
"Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me..."
"I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry."
Finally, she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?"
"It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned."
"Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?"
"Well, no Brenda, no."
"No?"
"Fact is, he got out three times to pee."
This happens to me a lot, I spend money in a similar vein to a fraudster apparently, so on quite a few occasions I have purchases declined for fraud reasons.
sunny-dave - i had a problem with virgin also. i have had line-rental, cable tv and broadband for them for six years. I recently inquired into getting a mobile phone contract with them, but I was declined, as my address does not exist. REALLY!?!
Hi Redman.....cheeky bu99er! Have you been to the brewery? It's wise to go with non Guinness drinkers so you get their freebies. x
Cazz...think I'm joining your fraudster gang. Last week I worked out how to get voice messages off my four year old mobile phone. (Or nubile as a friend calls his). First message received ten minutes ago....whoopee!
It's the credit card co. to say my card may be declined over the next few days.
This is a ploy to send me mad (der). x
Phone them up, tell them that this is unacceptable and that you are thinking of cancelling them because of a lack of service, so how are they going to correct this mess as all they are doing is digging a bigger hole.......there are others out there....
