In which novel does Queen Elizabeth 11 abdicate in favour of her son who, as Charles 111, politely informs the Conservative leader that he will in fact be asking the Labour leader to form the next government?

Whatever is the follow-on from House of Cards (is it Ian Dobbs) - you may think that, but I couldn't possibly comment!
Oh, second thoughts, could be a Jeffrey Archer - first among equals?

(a mis-spent youth reading crap)
The Queen dies in to Play the King which is the follow up to House of Cards by Michael Dobbs .
First among Equals was about three chaps and their quest to be Prime Minister.
I was wondering if it was Queen Camilla by Sue Townsend.
It's the one where the royals live in exile on a housing estate.
When the Conservative Party publish their election manifesto the reinstatement of the monarchy is one of the points in it .Her Maj cannot face being Queen again and sends Charles a letter stating that that she is abdicating.

I did read it but it was so dull I can't remember if Charles asked them to form a Labour government and it was a library book so I can't say for sure now .

Yes, Queen Camilla by Sue Townsend.
