have a long flight to Japan and wondered if anyone knows of a nice book to read on plane. Ideally, it would give me information about Japan; could be a novel or a light hearted history and geography of the country.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a beautiful book, although not really relevant to modern Japan.
Hello my friend, how're you doing these days? :)
When are you going to Japan, is it for a holiday or are you going to teach English there??
Can't help with the book unfortunately, haven't read any like that to recommend.

I don't know if you're old enough to remember the Book and Novel "Shogun" about a British sailor in the 17th Century washed up in Japan who ended up getting the ear of the Shogun and becoming a Samurai.

Well it's basically a true story and "Samurai William" is a book about him

more about him here:

it's rather an incredible story
Shogun is great and long enough to last the flight. Memoirs of a geisha is also good.

Thank you for recommending those books. I'll get Shogun as that looks interesting.
Hi eth. Not too bad, thank you. Got an opportunity to spend 10 days in Japan so taking it. It will be a complete change of culture. Are you over in France this summer?
The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd is historically interesting but not available on Kindle.
Question Author
Have looked it up on Amazon and it does look interesting, could be the book I read on the way home. Is it sad in the fact you can cry? Don't want to do that on a flight...!!!!
Ooh, lucky you going to Japan, never been myself but a cousins son married a Japanese girl and went to live there, he taught English as a foreign language and loved the country.
No, not going to la belle France this year unfortunately, too many family weddings, and celebrations for one thing or another, spread over the whole summer. This time last year we were on Il de Re and I'm really missing it :(
Glad your doing alright :)
