....or are there others out there who get really irritated at bad spelling? This board seems to be notorious for it. When I see something spelt incorrectly I just ITCH to correct it.

Is it a generational thing? Is it that english lessons in schools these days do not put too much emphasis on correct spelling? In these days of increasing text speak is it old fashioned and quaint to bother to spell properly?

Why don't people use spellchecker? Or even a good old fashioned dictionary? Is it just me being pedantic - am I the irritating intolerant one?

No - I am not an english teacher.
No - I am not an old fuddy duddy.
No - I don't profess to never ever making the odd spelling mistake, but.... aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh

Not all of us are literary geniuses (or should that be geniii?!) - but I just wish people would make an effort when writing to spell correctly.

Rant over.

I bet you double checked your post before you put it on in case you had made any spelling mistakes! :o)

do you know what - I didn't !!! Honest.
However, I'm unsure whether I actually spelt aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh correctly. Are there too many g's in there?!
Just because people use 'text speak' doesnt mean they havent been brought up at school and know how to write proper English.

On the flipside, you aint down with it so whos the problem :)

Ageism is a terrible thing.
I don't like bad spelling either, but sometimes mistakes are made by trying to type too fast and not checking before pressing send.
I don't like text speak on here and it should be kept for phones.

Apparently English should be capital E .

And this is an old arguement and very dull.

"english" requires a capital letter please - English.
I agree wholeheartedly sallabananas! The odd spelling mistake or typo is fine but when posts are riddled with them it drives me nuts.I have almost given up correcting people on here about it but in one or two instances I have had to comment.Text speak is the main one that gets to me,save it for the mobile phones people, not a website!
Question Author
It's not ageism - age should have nothing to do with it.

All I'm saying is, unless you are indeed texting on a mobile or similar, where it's appropriate to keep things brief & no-one expects perfectly spelt workds, if you know 'proper english' - then why not use it? - that's just laziness as far as I'm concerned.

Simple answer ta ya dont read em.

Toffee nosed ol bint

If you think it's a dull question or debate morelegend - then don't join in. Simple.

Yes, I know english is a capital 'E' - I'm not saying all posts should be 100% perfect in every aspect. Its when posts are riddled with mistakes that it gets my goat.
knobs
gonna text ya
workds EEK!

You are talking about Schools and the way they teach English to their pupils. That to me, is saying you believe Kids are not taught to your liking or are not taught 'correctly' which is complete rubbish.

:)
I agree with you, but, having said that, I would never criticise anyone for the spelling or grammar on this site as I don't know anyone's personal circumstances.

What is important on this site is that someone can make themselves understood.

I often find I have made spelling errors by typing too quickly. I often put 'there' instead of 'there' and only today put 'to' instead of 'too'. I should perhaps use the edit facility.

I don't think text speak is correct for the site though - I can't understand half of it anyway!!!

Toffee nosed old bint? I like it.
I'm not toffee nosed at all, it's just a 'thing' I have - I'm entitled to bring it up aren't I?

Go and live up to your name, knobby.
Oh, you are doing aren't you.

Oh lighten up, I only fancied a Friday rant - no need to get offensive.

'there' instead of 'their' (just proves my point!)
Question Author
I wasn't criticising anyone personally. I wasn't naming names & am not saying I've never made a single spelling or grammatical mistake on here.

And if you've read any of my previous posts knobby - you'll see I'm not a toffee nosed bint at all.
Question Author
Anyway, it's Friday - work over for the day, personal rant over for the day - you can fook off, I'm going to the pub.

Lack of punctuation makes reading a long post very difficult.

I gave up trying to decipher a very long question in 'law' some months ago - not one full stop, comma or capital letter.

Even a new paragraph in appropriate places would have been very helpful.

:(
I think you spelt fook wrong sallabananas.....
