Just heard this claim on TV and find it hard to believe. I live in a cul de sac of 28 houses, all with good gardens some up to a third of an acre.  We are the only veg growers.

So, was this claim true?  Many folk don't have a garden of any size

Could it have been eye patch?

Question Author

That's just as likely

You can grow veg in a relatively small area - even in pots.  I had a house with quite a small garden but I still grew tomatoes and melons.  Another house I had had a massive conservatory so again I grew tomatoes, cucumbers and melons there and spuds, sweetcorn, herbs, and salad leaf outside.  Here we have a large veg patch and a greenhouse and grow all sorts of stuff.  We've got fruit, herbs, spuds and garlic on the go at the moment and then we have tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and I am not sure what else the Head Gardener has coming on in the greenhouse.

Was that one in three folk, one in three households or one in three of those with a garden?

A poll of 2000 adults with gardens was done in 2021 and 28% said they had a vegetable patch so it was likely only households with a garden.

And when I think about it, when I lived in a city and we did not have a particularly large garden, I still had a polytunnel, 3 raised beds for veg and three free range chickens!!

I heard 'One in three have a veg patch'. No more specifics.

I know you can grow indoors in pots and in small spaces but I know all of my neighbours and none of them do

You weren't watching Dave on the telebox by any chance were you, when you heard the statistic? If so, it may be a repeat that had been recorded ages ago, back when more people had gardens and could afford their own properties. Two of the places I rented, within the last 10 - 15 years, wouldn't allow for any changes to be made to the garden, and that included planting anything - crazy I know.

All joking aside, I could believe that, given what Barmaid has said.

Does growing basil on a windowsill count?

I was talking to one of my elderly neighbours some years ago and mentioned how I would love to be able to grow my own veg and she surprised me by saying she had an allotment some miles away. That would never have occurred to me. Unless someone tells you, you wouldn't know.

Thyme will tell

Chip, you are a dilly dugger ;)

I need to go to Specsavers, thought this was an ad for Tena

It was the Tonight programme I was watching, so current

there are allotment round here too; the woman next door (on the 3rd floor) has one.

Covid lockdowns may have encouraged more to try.

I've a number of raised beds but only real successes are potatoes & garlic.

1 in 3 who/what.  Without a qualifier demographic it's meaningless.
