Good question. Personally I think it is to cover up an inferiority complex or the anonimity of this site lets them be the hard nut they wish they were.

maybe it is their nature

i have a small list of half a dozen who have been sarcastic, insulting or un-pleasant to me over this last year ... and now i simply do not talk to them

I have a similar mental list, excel. Like real life, I find it easier to just avoid people that I find rude/offensive/ignorant/unpleasant.

if people deserve being nasty to, would it matter ifthey were popular or not? Does being "popular" confer some sort of special privileges that mean you couldn't possibly ever be nasty to them?
