Notice to read properly before responding...
95 Answers
A notice before pressing submit saying, 'please ensure you have read the question properly and understood what the poster means before responding'
I know it should go without saying but its seems some need reminding.
It is very tedious and exasperating to ask a question and try to be throuough and clear about what you mean and what you want, to have to keep reiterating and pointing things out and explaining to each new responder - things that are clarified in the OP - because people have clearly just scan-read it, taken it out of context and jumped in with a knee-jerk reaction, based on one sentence or point, or simply to tell a little story that is vaguely related to the general subject matter...
Or to automatically gainsay what you have said - it is not possible or necessary to include every nuance and variation of a topic, so there is no need for people to jump and point them ALL out every single time...
it should be a given that each question refers to the individual point raised and does not require the shoe-horning in of every possible permutation or eventuality...
it is also not possible to continually acknowledge that you are maybe generalising and know that not everyone is the same in every sentence either...
so just a note reminding people to stick to the point raised in the question and to be sure they understand it...?

maybe if you made the question more direct without adding anything that would irritate and keep the question fairly brief, the actual question may be answered rather than parts of it that seem a little off..

DT...yes it would if people read it the way you meant it. if you are too succinct, you get question after question asking for more details... so you may as well put them in the OP
no red helen - why are you assuming I am foaming at the mouth here? I just posted an idea and explained why...i have not ranted or raved...
voulez-vous - yes but thats my point, if you skim for relevant facts, you will likely miss a few and also competely miss the context and tone - hence the irritation at having to re-explain...

joko, in my opinion, it's often six of one and half dozzen of the other. you are prone yourself to flying off the handle over some imaginary slight in your threads. it seems to me sometimes as well that if the person dosen't agree with you then you start getting defensive (ie your thread about the bus pulling out) and you are prone to making new threads about how people shoud answer your threads in a more orderly manner, or put simply how youd like them to be answered. the joy of this site is that threads are answered in an un orderly fashion. i don't think you ca n possibly control 100's of other people and make them answer how you want them to, so it remains that either you stop asking questions, or continue asking questions but prepare to be disappointed by some or all of the replies. Personally i hope you continue because i like reading your threads, which are often thought provoking
this question is not about a particular post
thats the point cazzz...you leapt straight in after a quick scan...totally missing the point i was making...i explained as fully as i could what i meant, yet i still had to then add a good few more posts explaining and reiterating what i meant...surely if id said even less then there would have been even less understanding - not more...
had you understood the context and why i said certain things you would not have jumped in on the defensive...
if people want to give proper answers perhaps reading the full question and taking a moment to digest is the issue...

a few of the responses here are a perfect example of my point
sara - you are being ridiculous... and clearly havent understood my point
bednobs, if i am attacked then i will defend myself - there is no 'prone' about it...
i am also not trying to control anyone...i am making a suggestion to remind people to read the questions properly - the fact that a number of have insulted me and decided that i am just having a rant is a perfect example of the point i am making...

no - I think "read the question and give a proper answer" is implicit in the very existence of the site. If a lot of people don't do it... well, their choice. In a few cases they will have misread questions (I've done it myself). Sometimes they'll want to provide extra information they think the OP might not have; that's not insulting, it's intended to be helpful.
Also, not everybody asks precise questions. Some are looking for all sorts of ideas and inspirations, and some answers provide them.
