A notice before pressing submit saying, 'please ensure you have read the question properly and understood what the poster means before responding'

I know it should go without saying but its seems some need reminding.

It is very tedious and exasperating to ask a question and try to be throuough and clear about what you mean and what you want, to have to keep reiterating and pointing things out and explaining to each new responder - things that are clarified in the OP - because people have clearly just scan-read it, taken it out of context and jumped in with a knee-jerk reaction, based on one sentence or point, or simply to tell a little story that is vaguely related to the general subject matter...
Or to automatically gainsay what you have said - it is not possible or necessary to include every nuance and variation of a topic, so there is no need for people to jump and point them ALL out every single time...
it should be a given that each question refers to the individual point raised and does not require the shoe-horning in of every possible permutation or eventuality...
it is also not possible to continually acknowledge that you are maybe generalising and know that not everyone is the same in every sentence either...

so just a note reminding people to stick to the point raised in the question and to be sure they understand it...?

No .. I cant read .. I have them read out by one of my slaves, who always says to me straight afterwards ...

'please ensure you have listened to the question properly and understood what the poster means before responding'
(but I am selectively deaf)
If a question is no longer than 50 words of one syllable, I don't suppose there should be a problem. Not for me, anyway......:-)

This one is a bit of a pain to read, so I just skimmed over it - seemed a bit pompous.
(time to do a 'Harp exit')
lol
joko... I think this may a little more succinctly say what you are trying to convey:

redhelen...your first post was sneering that i had pmt...and anumber of others have just been nasty and accusatory...

cazz...not many have actually answered me ...they have just been sarcastic and had a go at me ...telling me what i meant...

evian - thats not what i meant it to sound like at all in fact its quite irrelevant in what i was actually proposing ... as i said, i just get frustrated sometimes when i want proper replies from people who have understood and i have to wade through nasty sarky comments... i dont mind if someone doesnt undertsand and just asks for clarification, but many dont, many just jump in fists flying....

but still, no matter how many times i say it people jusy assume they know what i really meant

i see there are a few proper replies now...

boo ...yes i suppose you cannot keep saying it to people... either people will do it or wont...

DT...yes maybe just on joining...
Perhaps there ought to be a rider before the question itself is posted?

Something along the lines of "Please be aware that the longer your question the more open to many interpretations it may be, including 'mis-....'. Other contributors are permitted to answer your question in any manner they see fit, (providing they do not contravene Site Rules) and this may include views with which you disagree; this does not make them irritating or incorrect. Pressing *submit* is an indication of your understanding and agreement of these facts."

lol snags...i like it... Ed, can we have that at the top as the logo?
Unfortunately its like putting a sign up to ask children not to climb on the fence - it makes not difference, they'll do it anyway and the sign just antagonises them making them more likely to cover it in spray paint too while they about it.

Sorry if I've not stuck to the point.
Why cant we have a 'block' feature like FB ...would solve a lot I think Joko !

JTH... as i say, this has nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing

RH - theres plenty! maybe not 'nasty' exactly but certainly 'having a go'

and it didnt sound lighthearted...it just sparked the the notion that i was ranting - when i wasnt...and now all contributers have jumped on that too...

maidup - no thats the kind of response i was hoping for, one with a point and that actually addressed the question ... and yes maybe you're right, it may have that affect...

it was just a thought to make the site run a bit smoother... instead

and yes, i know i waffled on a bit in the OP...but i was attempting to explain thoroughly the reasons i had the idea, and the point of adding a polite note .. it wasnt a rant...

with all the rows on here i assumed most of you would understand what i was getting at and see that a simple polite couple of lines may make people think twice before steaming in on someones question...

I think that perhaps you just expressed yourself badly.
Question Author
