Strange noise in a VW Polo

I was driving home this afternoon when my car started making a strange noise. The noise only starts when I go faster than 35mph and it sounds like a cross between a faint siren and a mosquito in the car (if that makes sense - I am not very technically minded). Any ideas folks?

Where are all the experts tonight?
Loose fan belts tend to make a noise as you pull away from stationary rather than at speed.
Where's the noise coming from? inside? engine bay? boot?
Does it stop if you (very gently) touch the brakes - could be a bit of crud on a brake pad/disc just catching ?

Does it come/go when you are travelling around a bend but still over the 35mph ?

Is there a gnome in the boot with a vibrating fishing rod ?
Just thinking it could be something loose, not necessarily vital, that vibrates and sounds more mosquito like the faster you go
Check all the windows are fully wound up and the sunroof is securely shut.
Hi Mrs O. (1) Can someone check for you that the tyres are free from Nails / bolts being picked up within the tread, ( 2) is there something trapped within the under wing wheel arch? (3) have you had any work done on your car lately & what type if any any? (4) have you left the window slightly down? this letting in a flow of air? ( Whistling)

Hi all. Ive not had any work done on the car since its service and MOT in November. I cant identify where the noise comes from. It does not stop when I brake, only when the speed drops below 35mph. It is not a whistling from an open window, just a faint high pitched whine that is constant.
We had this on a focus and it was the seal on the front windscreen.
No not a live seal !!

Probably the nut that holds the steering wheel:). Perhaps a dry wheel bearing?
