Strange noise in a VW Polo

I was driving home this afternoon when my car started making a strange noise. The noise only starts when I go faster than 35mph and it sounds like a cross between a faint siren and a mosquito in the car (if that makes sense - I am not very technically minded). Any ideas folks?

It was like a high pitched whistling that got louder the faster you went, at 135 mph it was deafening.

Mr O has checked under the wheel arches and all looks ok
mrs overowl, this noise does it only happen when the car is moving or does it also make this noise if it is stationary with the engine revving ?. If I were you I would open the bonnet and start the engine, bring the revs up slowly to the approx amount of revs ( or more ) your car would be doing at 35 mph, listen for that noise while it is revving, if you can hear it then it is a moving part on the engine maybe a belt or a bearing on one of the moving components IE alternator bearing, air con compressor bearing or even the water pump.
If the noise only appears while the car is moving then it could be maybe a wheel related problem IE a wheel bearing, problem with a tyre or maybe one of the drive shafts.

Thanks tony, I will do that shortly and report back x

Right, I've had the bonnet up and revved it - not a trace of the noise
MrsO. Had a similar thing just this week with my Civic. Wondered if it was something to do with using air con for first time. Will get mine checked after my holiday but follow your thread with interest.
Question Author
I know mine isnt the air con because being from Yorkshire I am too mean to switch it on lol
Have you stopped singing to the radio, and noticed a difference :)

Righto mrs overowl, next thing to do if I were you, drive the car ( and I use the term car very loosely lol ) with a passenger, have your windows down and get your passenger to see if they can hear if the noise is coming from their side of the car and if it is coming from the front or the rear while you are doing the same on your side of the car. hopefully one of you will detect what the cause of this noise is. Also you could jack up the car (lol) one corner at a time and spin the wheel as fast as possible and listen for any untoward noise to suggest a bad wheel bearing.
Question Author
Listen you lot, this is a serious problem!

Where is fatbum....sorry, I mean the lovely tonyav when I need him?
Question Author
oops, crossed answers tony.
Thanks for that suggestion - it will have to be tomorrow now before I can do that. I will keep you posted
Oi you I bloody heard that, don't forget to wear your marigolds while your doing your car (lol) maintenance. So you may have to ask Baldric and Nibble very nicely if you can have them back lol.
Also I will be expecting to be relieved of all septic tank emptying duties from now on, thank you very much.
No chance !!!
:o)
