Is it legal to own an elephant in the US?

It must be somehow, atleast for zoos. I heard of a couple in texas or some state nearby that had a pet ox. The thing was almost taller than they were!
You couldn't just go out and buy one, but if you have the land and apply for a permit or something then yeah you could probably get one.
But don't. They are only happy with other elephants, in something like wild country. Very hard to keep them happy even in really good zoo conditions. Now if you were going to reintroduce them to America... In UK you'd need a dangerous animals licence, and would have to prove that you had the facilities to keep them safely. No doubt something similar in US.
