Why don't we let them get on with it ? Seriously. It is pondlife killing pondlife, so why not just fence them in and watch them slaughter each other ?

Well at two levels really.

At a basic level, humans are social animals and we are interdependent on each other in social groups, initially family and then at wider levels. This has proved to be a successful method of survival. If you have I am alright jack sod you, mentality, you will not risk your life, but then no one will risk it for you. In times where we faced real physical threat, such as sabre toothed tigers and and for economies of scale you couldn't hunt, gather, protect and rear children without the help of others.

As we have progressed and become more sophisticated we have developed the notion of morality and developed a culture of what is socially sanctioned behaviour. So we look after not just ourselves but provide all sorts of institutions to care and control the populace. Therefore institutions such as public health not only provide health care for the sick (morally worthy recipients of altruistic provision), but also control the diseases that could affect the wider population.

So we attempt to stop young men killing each other because it is a terrible waste of life and the victims families suffer dreadfully. And, because if we do not control young men and curb their aggression, the potential for civil disorder is very high

Eloquent ruby, but what I asked was why Britain doesn't just let the scum continue gunning and knifing other scum and doing us all a favour. I do not want my own taxes to go on policing this sort of stuff. I want safety, which means segregation from danger.
well done ruby another rambling answer from the extreme left,
these people are a total waste of space in a (trying to maintain) civilised society comprising people of moderate actions and tolerances,
i feel safer if these wasters are pre-occupied with slicing each other up, it means i can go to the shops and return with my wallet!
Whiffey, if you give your question half a milli-second's thought, the answer is blatently obvious - it's because they don't just slaughter each other.

You cannot be unaware of the recent media reports over the case of Jessie James, a bright young kid from a decent and well-educated family in Moss Side who was shot and killed, apparently for refusing to join a gang.

If we 'let them get on with it', innocents become victims, and that simply cannot be tolerated in any society.
You have to figure those idiots have no real training with firearms so most shots are poor with too many hitting a child or other inocent bystanders. With proper guidelines there are programs here where honest folks can carry a conceled weapon. In some states they don't even have to be concealed. With that in mind, the crooks have to take a chance on weather an armed person is around.
Just shows how clued up you are...

It is not JUST PONDLIFE getting stabbed / shot .... it's also innocents as well.

A young woman from our area, not pondlife, not scum, just happened to walk down a street to see a friend and there were a gang of yobs fighting each other.. oh and she got stabbed, she died instantly. She never knew them, never said anything to them and was a brand new mum.

I'm sure there are lots of other innocents like her. The answer is not to throw them all together & get on with it, but to throw the key away on anyone who carries/uses a knife/gun
