helicopter insect?

ive been sitting in the garden this afternoon and a flying insect, was about, its shaped like a helicopter and is about 2 inches long and looks like it has stripes and seesm to have four wings(!) on it anyone know what it is? thanks

I agree. We get quite a few in our garden, some are a dirty brown whilst others are a wonderful translucent blue.
We very occasionally get large ones, about 3 to 4 inches in length, which seem to fly round you as if inspecting you. Quite disturbing, as they seem to be able to fly in any direction - as you say, like a helicopter.
