I'm out every night in the dark with a torch, picking up these dreaded things from my garden. Have to ask, what is the point of slugs and snails? They don't eat insects etc, they just seem to exist to feed off cultivated plants!

Hi Bez..the live feed?..I've been watching taped stuff, and just went on there a half hour ago...Tryin to work out if the twins are up for eviction cos they agreed to be 1,or,will be one in the future?
Other than being part of the food chain, they probably serve little purpose, in the humans view... But, to the snail (indeed, all of nature) what purpose do humans serve, other than the benefits derived by other humans? Not every creature serves a large purpose, in the scheme of things... but there would be a noticeable drop (over time) in the numbers of frogs, toads and as mentioned hedgehogs, since a part of their food chain would have disappeared if we were successful in destroying all of the slimey vritters...
Yes it was a bit confusing at first....the theme for this week is going back in time....so in the diary room BB played back to the twins what they had said on Day 2....that being they wanted to leave together, as they are 1........ So they both had to agree to be put up for nomination this week and if they go (which I doubt they will) they can leave together....also BB are now calling them housemate, so I think even if they don't go this week, whenever they do they can leave together.....think that was it anyway....lol
i totally agree with you clanad just a pity this thread went off topic so to speak

Hi all , I am good at decreasing the snail population in my garden as I seem to hear a sickening crunch every time I venture out there in the dark :-) x
Late one evening, guy reading the paper hears the doorbell ring. "Who could that be at this hour", he thinks. As he open the door, he,a t first sees nothing. Then he hears ahigh pitched voice saying, "Could you spare a leaf of lettuce or cabbage, I'm really hungry?"... looking down he's surprised to see a snail. The guy's response was to kick the snail about 100 feet into the lawn.
About a year later, again, late at night, the doorbell rings... guy gets up goes to the door and on opening it he sees the snail again... snail says "Was that really neccessary?"....
Lol Clanad :-)

Not all slugs are bad. The leopard slug helps break down rotting vegetation in your compost heap. Slugs also eat other slugs particularly the leopard slug which is a shame) and they will eat unpleasant things like faeces - which is a good thing!
