A Hen is a female chicken

In fact, a hen is the female decription of almost all bird species.

Is a female duck called a hen? I always thought it was called a 'duck' and the male a drake.....no?

My boss, a farmer for most of his life, says hens are hens (or poultry!) and chickens are in the butchers or supermarket!

Yes BOO, and with swans there are cobs and pens, geese goose and ganders, and no doubt there are a few more. But that is a very small percentage of the 8600 or so bird species. Note I clearly said ALMOST all.
