I often drive past fields full of pigs which are full of pig-arks, or pig-arcs - those metal semi-tubular pig houses for them to sleep in. My question is, do the pigs have their 'own' houses or do they just sleep in the nearest one?

Pigs are among the most intelligent of domesticated animals and as such are quite territorial. This trait is even displayed during the early suckling order of piglets. The dominate individual in a herd of swine chooses the "best" place at the feeding trough as well as the mud hole and shade areas, including the pig huts. Lesser individuals challenge this hierarchy at their own peril. A neigboring friend chose to raise pigs as a youngster in a 4-H project here in the western U.S., and while most of the rest of us thought ourselves superior with horses, dairy or beef cattle and a few sheep, by far the most interesting behaviorial animals to observe, were his sow and 11 piglets...
I posted the same question a little while ago and found out that the huts are allocated on a strictly first come first served basis. They can exchange huts and this is quite popular as the ones near the feed trough also being near the entrance are the first to be emptied for bacon.
