They hibernate if the weather is very cold which it has been recently.
One ran out in front of my bike today, grrrr. THey're menaces. That's the third time that's happened recently, although they did disappear when it was very cold last week.

Hi bex! At one time it was thought that the grey and our own red squirrel hibernated during the winter - but they don't as they are unable to store fat.

They have two dreys. one for summer and a much more heavily constructed one for the coldest of winter periods and this is why you haven't seen them as they've been hiding in their cosy winter home. As soon as it gets a bit milder out they'll come sniffing out the food from their underground larder - if they can find it!

I've got two snails hibernating in my boiler house in the garden, I havn't seen them move at all. It's quite warm in there though.
