Received A Lovely Bath Towel

from an acquaintance that visits me now and again. I sent her a message to thank her. The thing is I have a set of new towels in the cupboard that are unopened and would much prefer to swop this item for something else, she has put a gift return receipt in the bag. It is from M and S.
She spends a lot of the time out of the country, how would ask if she minds with out upsetting her ?

I would quietly change them. I wouldnt ask. The fact she put return receipt shows she wouldnt mind.

If she put the receipt in the bag the chances are the she would not mind you exchanging it. Just explain the other towels and ask if she would mind.

She has put a gift return receipt in the bag, which would suggest to me that she wouldn't mind you choosing something else instead. If she does happen to pop over unexpectedly and asks about the towels, quickly make an excuse. 'I couldn't believe it when I drenched the towels in bleach whilst cleaning', might do it !

Don't tell her - as said, if she has given you the receipt, she expects you might do that. My mum and my godmother used to buy each other anything from M&S, knowing they could both take it back and swap it for something else. My MIL's done that already this year!

I agree with the others, if there's a gift receipt she won't mind and there is no need to say.I used to have loads of clothes that my mother gave me for presents that I wouldn't wear on my worst day. I never said so they kept on coming.

She is clearly happy for you to change them or she wouldn't have enclosed the gift receipt. If she does ask be honest with her, why lie or pretend there's some other reason. If she knows why she won't buy them for you next year.
