I'm not sure if it knows its name but when the lead is lifted it knows there's a walk in the offing.
yes, I have got two dogs and can call them by their individual names and only get a response from the one whose name I have called.
Oh yes - as woofie says - my two know their own names & respond to them (or anything phonetically similar).

Next doors cat appears to know that is is called Hugh Cooking Fat (by me at least) and that this is a signal to desist from crapping in my flowerbeds ...
no dog but both my cats definitely know their individual names and react when called.
I have just asked mine., 'Do you know your name, Brinnie?'

Back came the response, 'Bog off, it's Git.'
Yes, Frank seems to know his name, although he also responds well to "oi"!

He does, but he can't spell it yet.
Know it? He can say it!

Yes he does
So does she,
do you know yours?
is it not the sound they recognize rather than their name ?
Isla definitely knows her name, but responds to "piggy" as well!
well kind of anneasquith...I mean anybody's name is just a sound or collection of sounds. I don't think they think its their name the same as a human would. I think they think its the noise that their human(s) make when they want them to pay attention. My dogs take absolutely no notice when someone who they don't know uses their name.
anne one could argue we all only ever recognise the sound when talking.
my dog know's when you ask him does he want a treat but he dosnt know when you tell him to stop barking
I've a variant on that, pug. Two of mine are litter sisters who are like identical twins. If she senses there is something good in the offing for her sister, the other one answers to her sister's name. Both do this, and it often works .Not surprisingly, neither answers if she senses something unpleasant. I only found this out because there's a tiny difference in height, so if the other one turns up, I know the mistake.

My dogs generally answer to anything which sounds rewarding and a shout of "Boys!" brings all three dogs and "Girls!" brings all the bitches(so they've worked out which sex they are, at least!)

my sister's dog 'get-off-the-settee'
My daughters cat not only knew its name. She knew the other cats name too. On being pestered for food, daughter said "I'm not going to feed you till x comes down"
Cat darts to door. Races upstairs and returns with x!
Some of ours do but we tend to call them nicknames which we say in a stupid voice which then attracts the other 12 dogs. Then you have to make sure you ignore them all otherwise they get jealous. Sweep knows her name very well but when I call her I go "sweeeebee bee bee bee babee bee bee bee ba beee bee bee bee", he docked tail wages so hard it moves her entire back end as she trots over.

She's also a presenter on a childrens tv network.
... Sweebeebies on Sweebbc.
