Supposedly to keep the grass underneath them dry for them to eat!!

Growing up in "cow country" in western U.S., we know that cows, being ruminants, lie down several times a day to chew the cud.  In fact, cows lying down are considered an indicator of good pasture.  So, seeing a cow lying down before rain is a coincidence.  It is true, however, that cows drift with the onset of a blizzard in winter.  They will walk slowly down wind, tail to the blizzard, and do this for miles in open pastures.  In severe blizzards, they are often found drifted tightly into the corners of fences, sometimes dying in the cold...
