Why do cows lie down just before it rains i.e. when it is cloudy overhead. I was told recently that it is just an urban myth but I'm sure its not. Does anyone have any answers?

Its all part of the worlds great wonders, if crows build nest high in the trees in Spring it means it gonna be very hot in summer.
As when you see the under side of the leaves of a tree in the wind it will most likely rain that day.
I thought that cows can smell the rain in the air.
sorry, I live in the new Forest, surrounded by cows, either its and urban myth or no-one has told hampshire cows how to do it (actually shouldn't it be a rural myth??)

I agree woofgang, but here's a load more well known myths and sayings, but that is all they are - folklore.

Cows  shelter under trees when there are thunder storms - not the best place to be. Rooks  have their nests destroyed during high winds etc.  Having said that I do believe animals, particularly cows, dogs, cats and  horses  sense a change in air pressure that heralds a thunder storm, waving their tails about and generally behaving in a skittish manner - although this could have something to do with being bitten by Thunder Flies....

Also agree with woofgang. it IS an urban myth 'cos us counrty folk also know that a milk crate aint a cow's nest
