Had a kitten 2 days and it must have arrived with fleas!! We took the kitten off a friend at 7 weeks old as a present for my partners little boy.

However we are finding fleas in the carpet, the couch and on the animal. We have sprayed everwhere with flea stuff from the pet shop and the kitten has had flea treatment. My partner is hoovering twice daily and washing bedding etc...

But how long does it take to be finally rid and is there anything else we can do? We have just got our home perfect and its took the shine off our lovely house!

Put a saucer of vinegar on the floor. We put it under the coffee table. The fleas will jump into it and drown. We tried this and it does work! Also make sure you treat the kitten every 5 weeks or so to keep them at bay.
We had fleas from our cats a few months ago- everywhere just like you. I used sprays, . de flead the cats but nothing worked. In the end the only thing that got rid of them was a spray called Staykil Plus - killed the lot.
..as smowy..and you have to treat the cat and your soft furnishings thereafter
Having read the last paragraph of your OP are you sure you are doing the right thing by getting a cat?
Please be careful that whatever chemicals you use are suitable on such a young kitten.
I tried shop bought flea treatement and house sprays and it was useless. I took him to the vet and got some flea treatment from him, Advantage, I think. I asked about treating the house and he said it's pointless, the fleas can't live in carpets, etc. The flea treatment turns to powder and sort of sprinkles off the cat onto it's surroundings. It worked a treat almost straight away.

I didnt want to say "I told you so!" BUT I did have reservations and only gave in when I realised how much her little boy loved the kitten. But we have only been in the house 12 weeks and in only a short space of time turned it into a lovely home for all of us. Her sister says she will have the cat and the boy can visit as much as he likes, I like this option!!
We are having a couch delivered next week and new rug for living room and I just want everything to be perfect and as little extra hassle as possible.
I can see the kitten going......

I want the kitten to have a good start in life and with us being out of the hours a minimum of 4-5hrs at a time plus, as above, wanting to get the place how we want it, it should really go!
I'd be more worried about the toddler ruining my new rug and couch than a kitten.
Well, that's honest, thank you.
Wonder if the sister would want the child too!!

If your house is that perfect why get a cat in the first place - homes are for living in.

Sorry for critising but I really detest people who thinks pets are disposable.
Yes it should go.

Hopefully the poor little mite will get a home with people who love it and will care for its well being. It's only 7 weeks old and already being shipped off again.

At the risk of my post being removed, people like you seriously annoy me.
My cat has never done any damage to my house. My kids on the other hand ...
do not think you are in kitten mode jd..you really have to be a cat person to be successful keeping them and you happy !
Exactly Ummmm.

I'm with Boo and FGT on this. Too many people seem to pick up cute little pets and then get rid of them because they don't want the responsibility.
Poor kitty... far to young to be away from his mum yet and being re-homed already :0(
Once you have got rid of the fleas then surely you wont have a problem?

Boo - I dont take offence to your post, however judgemental you might sound! I am angry with myself for going with the flow and allowing the cat in the first place. We have been arguing all day about this.
I was inclined to keep the cat and give it a lovely home. But, having spoken with my partner properly, we realise that the animal would be better off with the sister who has kept cats before.
My partners motivation to get the kitten was because her 4 year old really wanted one and we thought it would be a good idea to teach him responsibilities as well as for company etc... The reality of fleas and the fact that the entire house has had to be hoovered, washed etc 2-3 times a day has made her re-assess, are we really the best people to have a kitten at this point in time. I will ensure that the cat has everything it needs at the sisters, I am fronting the vets bills and food etc for the first few months as a gesture. I am sorry people like me seriously annoy you, I assure I am a very caring and responsible person and I feel that I have let myself down by not putting my foot down in the first place.
What four year old wouldn't want a cute little kitten? It doesn't mean they should have one. Also, I've no idea why you're hoovering 3 times a day. Just get the kitten treated properly and you won't need to hoover any more than normal.
jd..I think you have demonstrated that you are a caring person by considering what is best for kitty as well as yourself...not for everyone a cat !!

Cats been treated.
Dead fleas are dropping off her onto the carpets.
The live fleas will apparently lay eggs in rugs/fabrics etc so my partner has become a bit OCD with the hoovering.
Im working away and want to just go home, I genuinely want best for the animal and I am angry with her!

It was because her boy is an only child and we wnated him to have a little friend around the house but thought it would teach him how to be responsible and care for something, install some values in him. We didnt just think "lets get a cute little cat" and now want to palm it off and I can see thats how some will see this
