You've seen the ad. - Last Monday 1 million+ Tesco baskets were cheaper whilst only 300,000 Sainsburys baskets were cheaper. My question is - Cheaper than what ?

They're comparing prices with the other supermarkets and choosing a list of common goods, then running checks on variations like 'if I buy washing powder, milk and tinfoil in tesco, it's cheaper than the equivalent in Sainsbury's, but if I buy onions, the Express and nappies it's cheaper in Saninsburys'. That kind of thing.

Is the ad. suggesting
If you buy a basket of selected items at Tesco they are cheaper than the same selection of items bought at Sainsburys.

However if you buy a basket of different items at Sainsburys that basket will be cheaper than that same selection of items bought at Tesco.

If that is the message of the ad.then there is no surprise. No one supermarket is the cheapest on every item stocked.

It would make more sense to say "Here are ten items of basics - the sort of thing you are likely you buy every day. If you buy them at Tesco it will be cheaper than buying them at Sainsburys"
