Sounds like the coolant is leaking out. Check all the pipes, also possibly head gaskett. Undo the oil cap and look inside if there is a creamy like substance in there the water is getting into the oil that means the head gaskett has gone.
I’ve not owned an Audi A3, but almost all vehicles with a water cooled engine have a filler tank that acts as a partial expansion vessel when the fluid heats up and expands. Normally this expansion tank has a cold level fill mark, but if for some reason you fill it to the brim, the pressure cap would release some of this excessive coolant, preventing the system from being over pressured – but it is not advisable to overfill the system.

If you are losing coolant, check as TTT says, but it could be a faulty thermostat not opening.
Overheating of an engine can cause catastrophic failure, I’d get a garage to look at it before it becomes a very expensive repair.
