Best DVD to AVI converter

Hi I want to convert all my DVD collection to AVI format so I can (a) Have a backup (b) Keep them all on a 2TB drive to save finding / loading the DVD and (c) be able to watch them on portanle devices...

have tried vixy, but got no audio on the converted avi file. Tried Super, but pic too dark and not recognised by my video editing software, pinnacle videospin. Anybody found a good converter, which is...
