I am about to have an old victorian house re-roofed. I have has 2 quotes for traditional slate fixed on with hooks. Can you tell me why they use hooks as I don't particularly like the look of them as...

can you paint over an artex ceiling with white paint without it going yellowy. I was told it was meant to not be painted but ours has a sheen and I thought a matt paint might tone the pattern down?
