Just got a message on my Mac Air screen, the first ever, from //apple,com----macupdate.info// saying:

A website you have visited today has infected your Mac with a virus. A full system scan is now required to find and remove harmful files or applications from your OS X 10.10 Yosemite device.

It then gives all my details, i.e. Brand, Device, Browser, IP, Provider, Location.

Then there is a SCAN NOW button. Do I press it?

Appreciate any advice as I'm not sure whether this is genuine or not. I have been on some websites today I've not been on before.

Cancel and close the window. DO NOT SCAN. It's a scam, spam malware con. Ignore it. Your Mac will be safe as long as you have your Firewall turned on. This should be on by default anyway. To check that it's on, close your web browser and then open the System Preferences and click on the Security & Privacy icon and then click on the Firewall tab. To make it even more...

Sorry should read Do I Scan or Not?? Plus it should be a full stop and not a comma in //apple.com//
Instead, you could download / install Malwarebytes for the Mac and run a scan to check for any viruses.

This should be on by default anyway.
To check that it's on, close your web browser and then open the System Preferences and click on the Security & Privacy icon and then click on the Firewall tab.
To make it even more secure go into Firewall Options and turn on the Stealth Mode by ticking the box to enable this.

If there is a serious virus going about, Apple will release a Security Update via the Software Update feature in the App Store Notifications in due course.

Wow, thank you so much Sycamore and Fanriffic. I've got rid now and I'm sure my Firewall's on but I'll check. What a relief. Thanks again. XX
