Yes, we are, everything's working in the background.
if this is not a philosopical question, google reticular activating system
I think there is a difference between unconsciousness and sleep. You can be roused from sleep.
you can be roused from unconsciousness too, though it's probably harder to do.

Theres people that have been aroused from (clinical) death as well Tilly. Its all a mystery.
You know what I mean!
"You can be roused from unconciousness too although it`s harder to do". Not really. Google AVPU

Thought I did, probably not.
I don't know if I do, Tilly. I take unconsciousness to be deeper than sleep, but I don't know if it's actually different, medically speaking. I found my neighbour unconscious in the entrance hall a while back but I was able to rouse him with some vigorous shaking.
dreams. dreams are part of our conscious.
If the person was really dead there would be no rousing them. If they were roused then whoever declared them clinically dead was wrong.
My dreams are more active than my conscious life awake. I have also been dead in that I had 2 flat line experiences 2 yrs ago and 4 nights unconscious in High Dependancy. I was fully aware that I was part of the American Civil War through all of it. Morphine did help the process.
Hi nailit, we're in rest mode aren't we? We're conscious to a degree but not to full capacity. We slip in to rapid eye movement as I understand it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_eye_movement_sleep
I still maintain that being unconscious and being asleep are totally different
They are different.
When people are asleep you can rouse them (even if they have taken a sleeping pill you can get some level of consciousness out of them, even if it just a bleary eyed grunt) When they are unconscious, there is no response at all. It`s not difficult to differenciate between the two when you have experienced them.

big prog about this twenty years ago
and all the supposed cases had large holes in them

around ten cases of criminal appeal were lodged the day after the programme and the attention seeker who led the program and should have Known Better was forced to recant on the step of the Old Bailey (news bite orchestrated by the BMA )
You may as well ask 'where does our consciousness come from'.
