Seems a little confusing to me Sandy, but this is what I found. The Battle of the Boyne was a battle in 1690 between the Catholic James II of England and VII of Scotland and the Protestant William III of England and II of Scotland, who, with his wife, Mary II, had overthrown James in England in 1688.

um er not that confusing

1688 - James II or VII&II - he go
throws gt seal in thames and takes all the garter medal so they ones he makes in France at 'true blue' and so on
1689 throne declared vacant - Wm n Mary invited to co-reign, as K n Q with the proviso if one dies the other carries on alone
1690 James II he comes back and gets his a-r-s-e kicked

whats confusing about that ?

Nothing. But here in NI King Billy is regarded as a hero who saved us from 'brass money and wooden shoes'.
The folklore has it that the Boyne was where Papism was vanquished. I assumed James has been king up to then.
King James wasnt a Good King - I am afraid
just as Mary I wasnt a Good Queen.

but he did beget a boy - which upset all those Prods

Princess Di misread the Act of Succession - the Prince of Wales shall not marry a Roman Catholic - as the Prince of Wales shall not be married to a Roman. And set her saintly heart on converting. and it all dates back to the chaos of 1688 ( er and 1690)

She ended up being bonked by a Levantine and the rest as they say is history
