No sorry sarah, I haven't seen any of my gypsy relatives for ages,friends bump into them now and again,but I should try to find them cos we are all getting older,but I remember them as lovely people, I moved away and now live in North Wales miles from all my relations.

I never got to read tinsheds comments before they were edited, others who did have commented though, I remember growing up in the fifties, when the Gypsies/Romanies were, in the main, still using horse drawn caravans, wonderful people, a culture all of their own, its sad that they now are being tarred with the same brush as the travellers/Tinkers.

Romany Gipsys do not exist where I live, not proper romanies anyway, just ********* with caravans and transit vans.

Hello tinshed, of course you can have your opinion,but you can't say that all gypsies are bad,none of my relatives have ever been arrested or caused trouble and never claimed any benefits,not even child allowance, they work hard the people near you ,may well be useless scroungers and troublemakers, but they aren't true gypsies. I wish i could let you meet my relations I am sure you would come to a different opinion to the one you hold now.

True gypsies - I don't know any. Travellers - my first encounter was a few years ago, they 'encamped' astride a public footpath on Mitcham Common. I had the ignorance and temerity to cycle through whereupon 2 dogs set upon me. I don't mean yapping at me, I mean viciously going for me. I had to pedal like mad to get away. When they left, huge piles of rubbish had mysteriously appeared.

The next year they settled on a football field on a different part of the common, many more of them, and it was much worse. It was enough to make you cry to see the total trashing of the area, just a field of rubbish - and human excrement.

Fortunately the council has now put up high earth levees and ditches and last year and this year so far have been traveller-free.

Been away so only just seen this thread. True gypsies? wonderful people, they used to come to our village when I was small and I used to play with their children in total safety, as I grew up and became interested in horses, they taught me loads of ways with them that I have never forgotten. Unfortunately, there are not so many around now, it's the "travellers" and they are a complete nightmare and I wouldn't go anywhere near them.
