I've never had a problem with them and I've had lots of business dealings with them over the years. They do tend to assume though sometimes that people will give them a hard time and get in first but the truth is that they remain the most discriminated against ethnic group in Europe so on the other hand you can scarcely blame them for that.It also depends on what you mean by gypsies, as the word has been bastardised to encompass all travelling groups, where as the Roma only make up a very small group. If you include all travelling itinerants then there are broader problems as there is no set social structure to govern their behaviour but proper gypsies are salt of the earth and I've got nothing against them whatsoever, in fact a group come and camp on our land every year and always leave it tidy, but then they know we have no prejeudice, so they in turn have no axe to grind.
Every year we meet up with the same group at a country fair. The older members command total respect from the younger ones, and they are all polite and friendly. The children are so clean and well turned out, its puts some people's kids to shame.
These are genuine Gypsies who have horse drawn caravans and sit by a campfire and cook.
Travellers however are a different matter. When we have a horse fair near us they descend like a plague of locusts, leave a filthy mess and local homes and business are broken into, and the latest scam seems to be stealing dogs from people's gardens. Nothing is sacred and they will steal from the stalls at the fair, and if you ever go to one you will see that they have wire mesh in front of their own stalls, so they don't even trust each other.
They sell tiny puppies and other small animals to anyone including kids and their horses are ill treated, but the RSPCA won't interfere as they say it would be seen as confrontational.
I imagine you mean the Romany folk and not travellers.
The first time I came across them was when camping in France. I had an ancient tent and sleeping bag and looked a mess. They came onto the site with the most immaculate caravan I have ever seen The outside covered in beautiful wood carvings, shining paint and the inside full of what looked like gleaming gold ornaments, full of flowers and not a speck of dust in sight. Naturally they looked down their noses at me!
Gypsies or Travellers..aka Pikeys?..there is a big difference as people have mentioned above..if you mean pikeys then they are a nightmare,most of them are thieves and conmen...Ive had many run ins with them where I used to work and they would come in to our workshop and help themselves to scrap metal,they are a pain in the ar$e when it comes to pubs as well...2 of them will come in for a couple of days just to give the place the once over and then before you know it there will be the whole clan in there....and the women are worse than the men when it comes to fighting...and when the police turn up you get the same old story..."Pleeeeeeease Mr Policeman ...honest to god, we haven`t done anything wrong"
my fiance is a gypsy but i tell u somthing he and his family are the cleanest people i have ever met they dont live in a caravan their selves but my fiances gran does and she has been on the same camp site since she was a little girl. the thing is the travelling gypsies who are mainly irish are the dirty b***ards who leave all the rubbish lying around they are a discrace to people like my byfriends family who are so nice and kind and will do anything for anyone.
As mentioned in the above posts, there is a big difference between Gypsies and Travellers, where I live, in Essex, we have a HUGE problem with the Travellers, camping on Green Belt land, flouting the law in town, and they are making a great mess also, occasional police raids on their site have turned up stolen vehicles and other property, but no prosecutions.
My Family are from gypsy stock,my gran was the first one to live in a house,real gypsies are hard working honest people,please don't tar them with the same brush as Tinkers and these modern day travellers most of whom are idle spongers, if you go into a proper gypsy van they are spotlessly clean and everything in them was paid for with honest money, my family travelled, working on farms & my great grandad was a fruit & veg dealer they just didn't want to live in a house or stay in one place to long, Cheers, Ray
TINSHED- personally i think that you are very rude the names you have just called gypsies are racial abuse. you are being very prejudice and i think that you should apologise.
the thing is you have just totally discriminated all gypsies if you would have read the above posts you would no the difference between the different types of gypsies ethnics.
tinshed,sorry to correct you but don't liken true gypsies to tinkers & travellers my family still travel, they are law abiding hard working honest people,you on the other hand are ill informed & ignorant of the facts,what happens where you live does not make them all bad, if you are mugged by a black man or a young white boy does that make all black people & young boys criminals, I am glad I am not being tried in court with you as a juror.
i agree raysparx my fiance is the ahrdest working gypsy man i have ever known he and his family work so hard for their money so they can have nice things and have a good life.
what about illegal immagrents in this country who do u think pays for their tax ? (yes you tinshed)
dont discrimante people for what they are.
what about people who live on the doal who do think pays their taxes as well
