20a CLOAKED perhaps? I don't know/have the crossword so can't help with the rest - sorry.
hi pega it's cropped for the negative.
letters are from the left clockwise CAEHDSPRBTWMBRPAWNGRSBGNEDU
Haven't explained that very clearly have I.
It all revoves around 19D Sir Edward Elgar
If you type Enigma Variations into Wikipedia this should give you your answers .The penny will drop!

thanks a lot shaneystar, this is certainly a puzzle, and needed some 'wits' to sort out, it looks an interesting Magazine thanks for finding it, been some nice bright days and almost finished setting back garden and will see if the veg seeds I got at cite europe come up brought them all there ! have a good weekend.
Been nice here too pega and have managed to start getting the garden straight .Generalist is a good crossword..glad you like it.
Have got a laptop now and I am struggling a bit getting used to it.It's taking ages to type anything!
Have a good weekend and enjoy the bank Holiday
Shaney
Hi Shaney - I am really struggling with this one. Can you explain how you worked out the link - It is all as clear as mud to me at the moment. Even with the answer to 19d I can't see where it came from. Sorry to be a pain - A thick pain at that. :-)

Thanks I got the answers from enigma's and names of people they referred to, but couldn't make sense of how these fitted from A-B, so that line doesn't make up any words, I like elgar's music and know Malvern and Worcester stayed in Malvern in my youth, and not so long ago I went to Elgar;s grave. Am glad you have a laptop, I am so glad I got mine, and I find it easier than a computer, I had some knowledge from when I was at work and then went up library before I got laptop, there was one name 1d not sure if this is spelt Steurt or stewart Powell. Thanks for all your help, Will be lots of w/end crosswords for the 'grey matter' and BH Monday extra Jumbo in The Times.
Hi again pega.....Steuart Powell.
Jimools...It's all to do with the Enigma Variations. Each variation that he wrote was named for a particular person and the initials of those people read clockwise around the top of the grid.Hope this helps.

Thanks Shaney. I must have missed the second post on this crossword. What I still don't understand is what lead you to Sir Edward Elgar for 19d in the first place. I just can't get my head round it at all. I am not very good with cryptic crosswords - I tend to leave those to the other half but he couldn't fathom this one.

I still don't get it either Jimjools!
It was only by putting the letters I had into a word finder that his name came up. Then I followed Kayakaminas hint about the Enigma Variations and it fell into place.Hopefully next month will be a bit easier ! This one was a real stinker.
Good luck anyway and have a nice weekend
Shaney.

Jimjools I did the same wordfinder with letters I had, and then found people's names, but glad Shaneystar helped with A - B I couldn't work out what letters went where as say things like after 25 but before vii whoever throught this up, and no sense at all for the top line I was looking for Elgar composition. However was intersting to do, Good Luck.
I am going to need it - I am still struggling even with help. But I am going to keep trying before I ask for more help. This is a real stinker - I still can't work out the clues like the one you quote. But will think about it a bit more. Have a good weekend both of you.
I think the answer to 7 could be cropped
Question Author
Jim Jools The Variations were based on people Elgar knew one example 22a i = Alice is wife once you have the list of variations will see where they fit in
Then all the peoples initials fit round the edge clockwise following the clues i through viiii.....the last set of initials being Elgars himself.
Keep us posted JImJools ...
