The name may be derived from 'God's Friday' in the same way that good-bye is derived from 'God be with ye'.

In the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland the day is called Great Friday.

I just Googled this, and came up with basically the same as Octavius.

only one star for Octavius Fanny? shame on you

it was the day jesus supposedly came back to say farewell to his disciples

Im not sure why its called Good Friday but i think it was named by the same person who invented the 'lucky rabbits foot' on a key-chain.

That wasnt such a lucky thing for the rabbits either.
